Helmets
All skaters are REQUIRED to wear a CSA-approved hockey helmet until they have successfully passed Stage 5 of the CanSkate program. To ensure your helmet meets safety standards, look for the CSA certification logo, as shown in the example below.
This is a mandatory requirement by Skate Canada to prioritize the safety of all skaters. For further details, please refer to our Helmet Use Policy or reach out to us with any questions.

Skates
Selecting the right skates is crucial for your child’s comfort, safety, and progress in skating. For skaters in the CanSkate program, both hockey-style skates and figure skates are suitable options, depending on your child’s preference and intended skating goals.
We strongly recommend purchasing skates with traditional laces rather than models with clips, buckles, or dials. Lace-up skates allow for a more secure and customizable fit, providing better ankle support and stability, which are essential for skill development. Properly fitting and supportive skates not only enhance performance but also reduce the risk of injury, ensuring your child has the best experience on the ice.

What should I look for when buying skates?
When purchasing skates, ensure they have a proper fit, firm ankle support, good-quality leather, and correct blade placement. Avoid skates with wrinkles in the boot, as this indicates poor quality.
Should I buy larger skates for my child to grow into?
No, buying larger skates for growth can cause discomfort and hinder your child’s progress. Properly fitting skates are essential for safety and skill development.
Can I use molded plastic skates?
Molded plastic skates are not recommended, especially for growing children, as they do not provide adequate support or flexibility.
How often should skates be sharpened?
Skates should be sharpened at a reliable skate sharpening location immediately after purchase and resharpened every 20 uses, depending on usage and care.
Can I remove the bottom picks on figure skates?
No, the bottom picks on figure skates are essential for balance and proper technique. Do not remove them.
What should I do to protect skates while walking on hard surfaces?
Always wear protective skate guards when walking on cement or other hard surfaces to prevent damage to the blades.
Clothing
When dressing for skating, choose clothing that provides warmth, allows for freedom of movement, and offers some protection in case of falls.
- Avoid bulky or restrictive clothing, as it can hinder movement. Snowsuits are not recommended.
- Layering works best: a turtleneck with a sweater or jacket on top provides sufficient warmth.
- Wind pants or track pants worn over long, comfortable pants help keep skaters warm and dry.
- Mittens or gloves are essential for protecting hands from the cold and potential falls. Always pack a backup pair in case they get wet.
- Long scarves should not be worn, as they can pose a safety risk.
- Be mindful that coaches use markers and bingo dabbers on the ice to create circuits, which can stain clothing. Consider this when selecting your skater’s attire.
Dressing appropriately ensures comfort, safety, and an enjoyable skating experience!
